Mesothelioma Treatment – Radiation Therapy

8:33 PM | 501 comments »

If a patients health is too fragile for surgery or chemotherapy, radiation is often recommended. Radiation causes the fewest side effects and is usually easier to tolerate than
chemo. There are a few different forms of radiation therapy available to meso patients:

External beam radiation – the preferred type to treat mesothelioma, this type of radiation comes from a machine outside the body and is aimed toward affected areas. Usually administered 5-days-a-week for up to 5 weeks, this type of radiation is often used for palliative purposes – to lessen breathing difficulties, pain, bleeding, or difficulty swallowing – but seldom has much of an effect on the mesothelioma tumors. This type of radiation may also be used in addition to surgery.

Brachytherapy - Rarely prescribed for mesothelioma, this kind of radiation places radioactive material directly inside the lung or abdomen.

Radiation side effects is bit controversial some scientists have really strict opinion that someone might use this only as a last resort where no other method is permissible and many other thinks that its does not have any severe effect if apply with caution.

  45. mohsin // September 15, 2009 at 4:57 PM

i think the best known cure for mesothalioma is chemotherapy but now new radiation method has been evolved which are very effective. i think external beam radiation is more effective and safe than the other one because in this method the patient goes through a five week slow radiation process which is quite safe while the brachytherapy is not safe.

  46. Sanesh.avasthi // September 15, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Radiation is a good option but i was told there were many sideaffects. One has to study the side effects. please folow the advise of doctor..

User of radiation for curing is an easy way to overcome a disease. But I have heard that it has side effects.

  126. Waqas Hanif // September 24, 2009 at 5:08 AM

Radiation prompts fewer side effects than other methods and is often less frightening for patients, because it is less likely to cause issues like hair loss.newer forms of this techniques reduce damage to nearby health cells, therefor causing fewer side effects.doctors may suggest for medication or other option to lower the side effects of radiation.as whole radiation is better choice for many suffering patients.

i think external beam radiation is more effective and safe than the other one because in this method the patient goes through a five week slow radiation process which is quite safe while the brachytherapy is not safe.

  144. sweetsweet20009 // September 29, 2009 at 10:54 PM

In the hospital.. most often people in the health fied would try to explore all other options there are before submitting patients to radiation therapy.. it can be effective, but hold some side effects too..

    Thanks for posting!

I strongly believe radiation therapy is not fool proof , it is dangerous but a person from cancer is nearing to death , so i feel nothing wrong in exercising radiation therapy

  170. ramy09 // October 4, 2009 at 10:54 AM

    Internal Radiotherapy:
Internal radiotherapy is a clinical procedure that delivers higher quantity of radiations to a Mesothelioma patient than the external radiotherapy. This is usually given to those patients whose cancer is on extreme stages. In internal radiotherapy, a radioactive material is placed inside the patient’s tumor or a radioactive fluid is given to a patient through mouth or injection. The radioactive material(s) then circulates throughout the body, with the help of blood, and annihilates the cancer cells.
